Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum | Genealogy Library
The James P. Harlin Memorial Museum was the home of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Harlin, former Mayor of West Plains. 
The house was built in 1889 and has been preserved, along with period furniture as a monument to the era in which he lived. A modern addition to the house includes a large gallery space and basement museum. In 2005, the gallery was named the Hathcock Gallery in memory of Roy Hathcock who served on the Harlin Museum Board for 25 years. The upper floor is devoted to touring art exhibitions and home to the artwork of Lennis L. Broadfoot, a Shannon County native who is best known for his book "Pioneers of the Ozarks," a portrait of early Ozark life. Published in 1944, this book includes Broadfoot's charcoal drawings of the earliest settlers, along with a short description of their lives, as told to Broadfoot. In 2005, Dane Broadfoot donated his father's art collection to the museum. Plans are underway to reprint the book and reframe the sketches under conservation glass.
The downstairs is dedicated to historical items, including military memorabilia from WWI and II, turn of the century farm implements, an authentic Ozark still and a perfectly preserved Springfield wagon.
The oldest items on display are Native American artifacts dating from 5000 B.C. The memorabilia surrounding some of the area's most celebrated progeny are on display; country music stars Jan Howard, Porter Wagoner and Speck Rhodes, baseball greats Preacher Roe, Bill Virdon and Tedd Gullic and Emmy-Award winning actor, Dick Van Dyke. The George D. Hay society has partnered with the Harlin Museum to establish a Hall of Honor and Museum for the preservation of the George D. Hay Ozark Heritage Legacy. The first Hall of Honor inductees include George D. Hay (Founder of the Grand Ole Opry), Jan Howard and Porter Wagoner.
Museum hours are 12:00 to 4:00 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, April through October. Open during winter hours for 
special programs or group tours.

Yellow House Community Arts Center 
Built in 1903, the Yellow House Community Arts Center is a volunteer organization devoted to promoting the arts and education in the West Plains area. Their mission is to give artists of all genres the opportunity to find their voice, vision and power and to provide a meeting place where artists and audiences may find common ground.

Avenue Theater The Avenue Theatre, a neo-art deco movie house built in 1950, operated until 1986. It was then donated to Arts on the Avenue, Inc., a non-profit arts organization formed to convert the facility into a community theater.

The University / Community Programs department provides educational and cultural programming for the university and community. Programming includes visual and performing arts, concerts, workshops, films, and lectures. Programs are delivered at the West Plains Civic Center through a cooperative agreement with the City of West Plains.

Old Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival
Come celebrate old time music and the unique culture of the Ozark Highlands at the City's signature event, the Old Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival. The festival is held annually, the third Friday and Saturday in June, on the Historic Court Square in West Plains. Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home & Museum
Rocky Ridge Farm,where Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her famous 
"Little House" books, is only 57 miles west of West Plains on highway 60, in Mansfield, Missouri. After Laura's death in 1957, her friends and neighbors in Mansfield formed the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home Association with the goal of preserving intact the Wilder home and its many treasures.
Thousands of admirers of this pioneer family have visited the historic site each year since 1957. Next to the historic Wilder home is the Laura Ingalls Wilder-Rose Wilder Lane Museum. Visitors can see Pa's fiddle, handwritten manuscripts, keepsakes of the Ingalls and Wilder families and many other items.
